Hello everyone! Welcome to my personal blog!
My name is Amaya and I am a content creator. I am a passionate writer and video editor, and I am here to share my knowledge with you along with my eternal love for all comic books, film, and television.
I wanted to create this blog with the sole purpose of sharing my love for film and comic books. I have always been inspired by creating stories. Whether it is by page or screen, storytelling has been a big part of my life.
From a very young age, I have grown up with the superhero world. Whether it was watching endless hours of Batman Animated Series and being inspired by the cape crusader himself; to finding joy and comfort in the world of the X-Men. Or learning one of the greatest lessons from my favorite web-slinger: with great power comes great responsibility. Everywhere I looked, I was surrounded by the amazing heroes that will inevitably inspire me to jump into a career in filmmaking.
Yes, a career in filmmaking is still a work in progress. After graduating this past December from NYU with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film and TV and a Minor in History, I began working as a social media producer. However, I quickly realized that once you graduate, there seemed to be more free time for you to use than back in school. So, I decided to go back to my writing roots, and continue learning more about content creation and social media. This is why I also wanted to create this blog.
A lot of the things I learned, I did it on my own. Whether it is learning how to make amazing edits on Adobe Photoshop, to video editing in Adobe Premiere. Creating is the thing that drives me. It is was what got me through tough years in high school, and helped me develop a sense of wonder. The thing about creating and storytelling is that you never stop learning. There is always something that you learned in the process, whether it is a technique, or about relationships. Eventually, as you grow in the world, there still remains so much you will explore. All of it will be a source of knowledge and inspiration for your work.
I decided to create a space to share with others not only my love for film, and graphic novels, but also a place to learn about content creation, video editing, and photo editing tricks. It will be a place where not only I will share my own personal experiences with you, but also demonstrate some techniques that will hopefully inspire you to create content of your own.
In this blog, I will be sharing with you some tips and tricks for video editing and content creation. But before we get started, I wanted to tell you a bit about myself.
La Gringa en el Cine
I am a Venezuelan-American artist with an endless passion for writing. Hence while you will be reading this blog and the many posts to come. Since I have graduated recently from college, I have a bit more time on my hands. So of course, I ended up going back to my favorite hobby which is writing.
I have always been a writer. I have been writing short stories and imagining epic battles since I was a little girl growing up in Venezuela. I was born in Boston, Massachusetts in a summer back in 1999. My parents were wonderful, even if half of the time I spent acting as I was a masked vigilante defending the city against its villains. Then due to the political climate and dictatorship, we sought a better life outside of our warm home in Caracas. However, moving around as a kid is tough. My solution to that was seeking refuge in the heroes that I grew up watching.
A lot of the films that I watched growing up has impacted the artist I am today. Whether it is seeking comfort in the world of the X-Men, realizing that being different was my superpower. To finding the light within the darkness of our world through Gotham. All of the heroes that I will talk about here inevitably influenced the kind of stories I wanted to tell and shaped the person I am today.
Growing up, I was always a curious kid. I wanted to understand the world around me, and these stories became the lens in which I viewed the world. It was this that inspired me to pursue a career in storytelling. Being able to inspire, comfort, and bring joy to others is the sole reason why I became a filmmaker and writer.
Although, it wasn’t until my media class in high school that I learned the process of storytelling. I learned how my favorite films were made, and how that can be a career. I quickly fell in love with film theory and its history. To the point, I ended up taking a 16mm summer course at Emerson College. It was there that I discovered my passion for film.
Surrounded by spliced film rolls on a bin from a previous editor. Sitting on the Steenbeck, winding forwards or backwards the film to review our edit. It was the most peaceful place I had been. While I sat down on the editing suite with 16mm film in my hands, splicing the shots together, I swore to myself that this is the life I wanted. I have never been as happy as I was on that moment. It felt like coming home.
There is also something therapeutic about writing and creating. It was a form for me to distance myself from the chaos. At its core, it was all about my relationship with the content I was creating, and my process of understanding people and the world around me. Much like I had done when watching those superhero cartoons growing up, but this time it was me who was creating the story. Why did the character do this? What led them down this path. It was all about the cause-and-effect mentality.
Why did I create this blog?
I have always loved art, music, and reading. Different mediums of art are what inspires me. I might be reading a comic book when facing writer’s block and somehow everything makes sense.
That being said, I am a fan of all forms of storytelling and a content creation. This is why I am opening this blog! I will be sharing what I know with you. From Photoshop to Premiere. My experience managing social media accounts, and storytelling advice that I wished I knew when I started college; including my own thesis film.
But most importantly I am fulfilling my passion as a writer. This is one of my favorite creative outlets that I want to share with all of you!
I am also an avid graphic novels reader. You will probably see a lot of my articles focused on Marvel and DC because they are my entire world. These stories are one of the reasons why I became a writer. They impacted my childhood in the best way. It helped me understand the world around me and created a constant in life despite all the changes. But most importantly, I admired how they explored the issues of our world through their stories. These are the stories I want to explore and encourage others to do the same. I want to showcase the issues of the world in hopes of inspiring change. These stories do it in an universal way, that connects us all.
What drives me into creating content?
I am never known why I have the need to create. But I think this is the dilemma that every artist has at some point in their lives…or maybe forever. It might be that pursuing new projects throughout our years is our way of finding the answer to that question. There is this need to create that I have, either to process our world, to understand ourselves or an event we have gone through.
One of the things I know for sure is that this is my passion. Creating is what drives me. Creating is what inspires me. It is a form of healing, and understanding not only others by myself as well. I have always wanted to inspire others from a very young age.
Only recently, I have realized that one of the ways of archiving this is by sharing what I know with others. I am extremely happy anytime I get to support others by sharing my knowledge with them. Especially, the things I knew might have been helpful for me when I was entering college and the world of art.
Art allows us to connect with others. That is pretty fun! Art is one of the things that is an universal way of telling stories, sharing knowledge, and our love for the world we lived in; no matter how bleak it might seem sometimes. I found my best friend because we both shared our love for comic books.
When you are working in film or content creation, you are always learning. Which is one of the reasons I love it. I am someone who lives by the saying: you learn something new every day. Of course, one of the times I am the happiest is when I learn something new. I self-taught myself how to use Final Cut, Photoshop, and Premiere.
I am here to share my expertise in content creation, but also my love for all different forms of art. One of the reasons why I love content creation is because of all of the forms you can use to tell your story and your voice. Whether it is in video, writing, or podcast, you can develop share your story. I am ready to share mine with you.
I love art and if you love it too. Then you are in the best place.
Some of the topics that you will be expecting from me will include:
o Comic books
o Superhero films and their stories.
o Women in film – because sadly we don’t talk about this as much as we should.
o My experience growing up as a Latina storyteller.
o Sharing my favorite sources of inspiration such as Taylor Swift. You will be seeing a post once in a while about her. She is a gifted artist and my role model.
